song of the day: television, marquee moon
my office is a-buzz, i tell you... a-buzz! today is the highly anticipated office picnic. really, the sight of us looks a lot like a family holiday gathering. i'd say the median age of my "older" colleagues is around 53. (i love saying "around" and then naming such a specific number... that's right... like i did just now.) then there's a pretty large gap (with a few 30-somethings in there) and then a handful of us who are still in our 20's. we look like the grandkids at a family function. we have the kids table where we all sit together and make fun of a few of our colleagues (in a joking sort of way, of course) and make a few inappropriate comments, engage in a few friendly sporting games, and inevitably one of us does something stupid to get hurt. all while the "adults" sit around and drink their diet coke out of a can wrapped with a napkin or something so as to avoid actually touching the condensation on the can (what's this on my hand?! water?! well, that's the end of that!) and half-heartedly interject a laugh or side note into a conversation. they might partake in a little bocce when things get wild. but just like family, they are endearing and you enjoy (most of) them anyway.
